What If I Can’t Afford an Attorney?
In criminal defense cases, the State may appoint an attorney to your case, if you demonstrate income and asset eligibility. Keep in mind, however, that the State does NOT typically appoint an attorney for your case until after you have been arrested and formally charged. The State does not typically appoint attorneys for parents or litigants in divorce or custody cases, and most often lacks the authority to do so.
